Consultation, Design, Consent and Planning
We offer an initial free consultation service to discuss your building requirements. This can be extended, as required, to include design and drawing up of plans, submission for planning, obtaining listed building consent, if applicable, and full building regulations.

 

Structural Engineering
Many building projects require structural calculations. As one of our specialisms is complex structural alteration to older buildings, we employ an associated structural engineer to undertake all necessary calculations. These may range from a simple oak beam or steel calculation to a detailed structural plan for a large basement build or underpinning.

 

Listed building specialists.
A significant amount of our work is in listed buildings. We can liaise with your local listed buildings officer and undertake all necessary work using the correct traditional materials to achieve the required period finish. Work ranges from refitting purpose-made windows and period carpentry, through to complete structural renovations and rebuilds.

Barn and loft conversions.
We have converted and renovated a number of barns and lofts. We offer the complete building service for such projects, ranging from the initial groundwork through to the final plastering, kitchen and bathroom fitting and decorating.

Traditional and eco new-build.
We build new, but in traditional styles as well as undertaking 'eco' construction. Increasingly we are asked to complete projects involving 'eco' methods. This might mean just using sheep's wool insulation or it could involve constructing a whole house with alternative materials. 
Most building materials can be obtained from sustainable sources. These include: various insulation materials -sheep's wool, newspaper and flax; FSC certificated timber, locally grown hardwoods for structural work and flooring; reclaimed stone; bricks and roofing slates/tiles; lime plaster and cob; hemp blocks and hemp board; organic breathable paints; sealants, wood stains, and oils.

 

Roofing work - including cut roofs, slating and tiling, lead works and turf and sedum roofs.
Our roofing work is mainly undertaken on conversions and new-build. We are specialist timber roof framers and will undertake most types of framing, including eyebrow dormers. We also carry out re-roofs, dormer work and Velux and conservation roof-light fitting. We are registered fitters for ‘Phoenix, Cold System’ air welded, flat roofing products. We have also completed a number of turf and sedum roofs. Our specialist lead fitter undertakes complex and traditional lead roofing, including bossing and welding.

 

Bespoke Stone Work.
We work with various local stone – Ham, Bath, Portland and Beer and produce bespoke fireplaces, gargoyles for ponds, walls, churches etc, window mullions & cills, as well as plaques.

Lime plastering, lime mortar and cob repairs.
Older buildings and newer environmental structures often need lime work rather than modern cement based products, in order to allow the building to move and breathe naturally. We supply lime plaster and lime wash and undertake lime plastering and lime and cob repair work. Read More

 

Flooring and Limecrete.
We specialize in the supply and fitting of natural stone and wooden floors. We can source natural breathable organic sealants and stains for floors. We can offer you a specialist service in limecrete flooring, where instead of concrete and standard insulation, we use a breathable lightweight material called LECA (Light Expanded Clay Aggregate). This material acts as insulation and hardcore, when it is mixed with lime to create a limecrete, on which a stone floor finish, with lime joints, can be laid. This is an ideal floor in an older building where the surface needs to breath or where a concrete finish is not desired.

 

Green Oak & Douglas Fir - summerhouses, workshops, and playhouses & gardens rooms.
Recently we have started to build a range of structures for the garden. We frame up in green oak or douglas and occasionally standard soft wood. Buildings are then clad in timber, floors fitted and insulated if necessary, and roofed with sedum or the phoenix system. Electrics and plumbing can also be provided.

Plumbing including general plumbing, central heating and rain harvesting systems.
We have a dedicated plumbing team, who can offer you all the plumbing and bathroom options. Recently, we have started to offer environmentally friendly rainwater harvesting and grey water recycling systems, which have the added advantage of reducing water consumption and water bills.

 

Bathroom & kitchens.
We offer a specialist team of bathroom and kitchen fitters - kitchen units in soft wood or hard wood can be made to order. Bathroom fitting can include traditional reclaimed fittings, or modern units. We also offer wall and floor tiling in ceramic and natural stone.

Ground work, ponds and landscaping.
We build formal and informal ponds and can carry out landscaping work when undertaking construction.
