Given our focus on using traditional and sustainable materials and methods, not everyone will have come across some of these approaches to building. Here, we answer some of the most common questions we get about certain materials and techniques, and explain why these approaches are often more beneficial to the health and longevity of your building.
Lime plastering is a traditional method of wall finishing using a blend of lime, sand, and water. Essential for historic and listed buildings, (and effective in modern ones too!) it allows walls to "breathe" by absorbing and releasing moisture naturally—preventing trapped damp and structural damage. Lime plaster is especially suited to older buildings constructed with breathable materials like stone or timber, where modern gypsum plasters can cause long-term harm. It offers excellent durability, flexibility, and a beautiful finish. Unlike cement-based plasters, lime moves with the building, reducing cracking, and is far more sustainable—requiring less energy to produce and less carbon intensive. Lime plastering preserves the integrity and character of heritage structures while supporting healthy, energy-efficient interiors. Interested in having Lime plastering work carried out? Sustainable insulation refers to natural or recycled materials that provide effective thermal performance while reducing environmental impact. Materials like wood wall boards, wood fibre insulation, and sheep’s wool are breathable, helping to manage moisture in traditional and listed buildings—reducing the risk of damp and decay. Unlike synthetic products, they are non-toxic, low in embodied carbon, and often recyclable or biodegradable. Wood fibre and sheep’s wool also help regulate indoor humidity and improve acoustic performance. These materials are well suited to older buildings, as they support the structure’s long-term health and energy efficiency without introducing materials that could cause damage over time. At the Heritage Coast Building Company, we try to use these materials where possible.
Hemp-block construction uses hemp stalks mixed with lime to create durable, breathable building blocks. An exciting approach to eco-friendly and sustainable builds, hemp blocks offer excellent insulation, moisture control, and fire resistance. They are carbon-negative, meaning they absorb more carbon dioxide during growth than is emitted in their production. Hemp blocks are lightweight yet strong, making them a practical choice for both walls and partitions. Their natural properties also help maintain healthy indoor air quality by regulating humidity and reducing the need for artificial heating and cooling. Hemp-block construction is a practical solution for energy-efficient, environmentally responsible buildings that support long-term sustainability. We completed our first hemp-block new build construction in late 2o25, and developed a deep and practical understanding of how to work with this sustainable approach to building.
When your property or building is listed, it means it is legally recognized as having historical or architectural significance. This status helps protect the building's character and ensures its preservation for future generations. Listing typically comes with restrictions on the changes or alterations that can be made to the structure or its features. Using a specialist builder like the Heritage Coast Building Company is essential for listed buildings because they have the expertise to work within these regulations. Understanding the complexities of restoring or maintaining a listed property while preserving its unique elements is essential. Moreover, specialist builders are trained in traditional techniques and materials, ensuring that any work done complies with local heritage laws, maintains the building’s authenticity, and prevents unintentional damage. They can also navigate the planning process, making sure your project meets all legal requirements.
